Being an artist is unique. We often create one-of-a-kind art so we mistakenly believe there is only one way to make a living — selling one piece at a time. But I’d like to share with you other ways you can make income from your art. Who doesn’t love additional income streams!

Repurposing

This is one of my favorite ways to create additional income. When I create a piece of art that I truly love, I want to reimagine that art being used in other ways. One way I’ve done that is by scanning the image and then cropping out a section of it and printing it on fabric. Then, using that new piece of fabric to make something completely different. Sometimes I might use it to add some hand stitching and then frame it. Other times I’ve taken the fabric and incorporated it into making a pillow cover, wallet, handbag or tote. Or, sometimes I turn that art into a greeting card. The ideas are endless! Use your imagination and have fun with it.

Patterns/Coloring Books

One of my good friends Kelly Hoernig has turned her paintings into patterns for other painters to purchase.

Coloring books are always super popular.

If you are into sewing custom pieces and enjoy pattern-making, then you already know that sewing enthusiasts never have enough patterns.

E-Books

Everyone loves step-by-step instructions. Why not create an eBook with a tutorial on how to create something? The skies the limit and people are happy to pay for this type of quick digital download.

Online Course or Membership

Your reach is endless when you use the power of the internet. And you’d have to be living under a rock not to notice how there has been an explosion of online courses and memberships. Use your talent to teach others! Everyone has something to share. As an artist you can truly make a difference by simply sharing your love of what you do. Don’t worry about plenty of others doing the same thing. No one has your voice, your unique style and passion. Go out there and share it with the world!
